1. With sufficient exercise, your muscles become good at picking up fuel from your blood, so you have less chance of type 2 diabetes.

2. In addition, sufficient exercise puts your heart and blood vessels to work, making them stronger and lowering your risk of cardiovascular disease.

3. Exercise increases the blood flow in your brain and improves the functioning of hormones and other substances in your brain. The improved functioning of your brain has a beneficial effect on your mood and even on your cognitive (intellectual) functions. Exercise seems to reduce the risk of cognitive impairments, including dementia and Alzheimer’s.

4. Exercise increases your resistance and helps to get rid of stress. During moderately intensive sports or exercise, substances are released that have a stress-reducing effect. Intense exercise during chronic stress or a burnout is not a good idea, because then you are already stiff with adrenaline and you create even more adrenaline, which means that you can no longer recover.

5. If you exercise 4 to 8 hours before going to sleep, you will fall asleep faster and wake up less often. But beware: intensive exercise less than 4 hours before bedtime has a negative effect on your sleep.
